Understanding the 811 Protocol Before You Dig
At Parker County Excavation, safety is always our top priority. One of the most critical steps in ensuring safety during any excavation project is calling 811—the national "Call Before You Dig" number. Whether you’re a contractor or a homeowner, contacting 811 before starting a digging project is essential to prevent damage to underground utilities like gas lines, electrical cables, and water pipes.
Here's a step-by-step guide to the process of calling 811 and what you can expect:
1. Plan Your Project
- Identify the location of where you plan to dig.
- Mark the boundaries of the excavation area using white paint, flags, or stakes to indicate the work site clearly. This helps utility companies know exactly where to check for underground lines.
2. Submit a Request to 811
- Dial 811 or visit your state's 811 website to submit a request at least 2-3 business days before your scheduled project.
- Be prepared to provide:
- Your contact information (name, phone number, address)
- Location of the dig site (street address and description of the area)
- Type of project (landscaping, construction, etc.)
- Planned start date and time of your excavation.
3. Wait for Unitilty Markings
- After your request is submitted, local utility companies will be notified.
- Utility locators will visit your site within a few days to mark the locations of underground utilities using color-coded paint or flags:
- Red: Electric power lines
- Yellow: Gas, oil, or steam lines
- Orange: Communication lines (phone, cable, internet)
- Blue: Potable water lines
- Green: Sewer and drainage lines
- Purple: Reclaimed water, irrigation, or slurry lines
- White: Proposed excavation area
- Each marking indicates where utilities are buried, so you can avoid damaging them during your project.
4. Verify Markings
- Once utilities are marked, review the marked area to ensure they align with your work site.
- Use the color-coded markings to guide your excavation process and avoid digging in marked zones.
5. Dig Safely
- Dig with caution, particularly within 24 inches of either side of the utility markings (the “tolerance zone”).
- Use hand tools when digging close to marked lines to prevent accidental strikes.
Keep in mind that utility depths may vary, so always proceed with care.
6. Respond to Emergencies
- If you accidentally damage a utility line during excavation, stop work immediately and contact 811 and the utility company directly.
- In case of a gas leak or major utility disruption, evacuate the area and call emergency services.
Why Call 811?
Calling 811 before you dig is more than a legal requirement—it's a crucial step to:
- Prevent injuries from striking gas or power lines.
- Avoid costly damages to utility infrastructure.
- Stay compliant with state laws and local regulations.
- Maintain uninterrupted services for the community (internet, water, electricity, etc.).
At Parker County Excavation, we take the 811 protocol seriously, ensuring every project is safe and efficient. Remember: It’s free, it’s easy, and it’s the law! Before you dig, call 811 and protect your project from unnecessary risks.
Stay safe and dig smart!
